we took a bus ( 13/4 hr) and train(1 12/2 hr) to Machu Piccho from Cusco.  We stopped in a local market and Inka bar ont he way.  Machu Picchu was "discovered" in 1911 when an Indian led Bingham to the mountain top site.  The Spanish never found it and the building and abandonment of the are unknown.  It is on the top of a mountain and a bus is used to transport us to the site.  We stayed at the President hotel.
